Legendary investor Jeremy Grantham (above) of Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo (GMO), a Boston-based asset management firm, has published a treatise on the root cause of exploding commodity prices.
He has also offered a startlingly depressing outlook for the future of humanity.
Grantham concludes that the world has undergone a permanent “paradigm shift” in which the number of people on planet Earth has finally and permanently outstripped the planet’s ability to support us.
Specifically, Grantham says, the phenomenon of ever-more humans using a finite supply of natural resources cannot continue forever–and the prices of metals, hydrocarbons (oil), and food are now beginning to reflect that.
This is the most provocative article I have read this year. As a GP student, do not get lost in a sea of facts and prescribed readings. It is always crucial that you are genuinely interested to know and understand what is happening in the world we live in. Ask lots of questions about anything and everything. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it has prospered many a GP student. As the teacher can only answer a limited number of questions, go and find the answers for yourself and then think about them. With the Internet, there are no excuses to be ignorant.
Articles like Grantham’s will certainly get you thinking. He predicts a dire future for the human race and provides highly compelling evidence to back up his claims. Do you think the future is so bleak for the human race? We are the most intelligent species on this earth, but sometimes also the most foolish. Will we be able to overcome the formidable challenges that loom on the horizon? If so, how?
I welcome your comments and will respond to them as much as I can.
